WWW Wednesday #24

www w

WWW Wednesday is a weekly book meme hosted by Sam @ Taking on a World of Words. The Ws are the following questions:

  • What are you currently reading?
  • What did you recently finish reading?
  • What do you plan on reading next?

I can feel the reading slump approaching, which I really don’t need. I’ve been so focused on reading ARCs lately because I wanted to get ahead of them for once, and regardless of whether I’ve enjoyed them or not, reading them still feels like a chore after a while. I keep getting distracted even if conditions are (in theory) perfect for me to focus, and I want to change that and to do that I need to read something that’s just for me. I’ve been already doing that by rereading some of my favorite webcomics this past weekend and I will try to continue by forgetting about ARCs for a while (and to be honest, my Netgalley ratio is currently 84%….I think I deserve to read something that’s not an ARC!)

Blogging has been weird lately. I said at the end of July that I’d try to cut back on the number of posts each week and I’ve still posted three times a week for the whole of August, which I’m not mad about but also why?? I’m supposed to be on vacation???? Anyway since the wordpress editor has changed for everyone I’ve been fighting it unsuccessfully so I’m writing my posts half in the wp-admin section and half in the block editor (and sometimes if I’m desperate I’m using the html editor…yeah it’s bad). I can see there’s some good things in the new editor but for the most part I hate it and I’m simply not in the mood to learn a new thing right now, but I’m sure eventually I’ll get used to it even if it means I’ll have to change some things in my layout (which I’m MAD about!!!!)

Also in case you can’t tell I’m gonna use this little section in this type of post to write weekly rambly updates because I don’t know where else to write them and I realized that while I’m not someone who likes to overshare on my blog I still feel like I’ve been a little too impersonal lately. I hope it’s not annoying, if it is you can skip and go to the next section where I actually talk about books.

📖 The Lights of Prague by Nicole Jarvis  —  e-ARC // at the time of writing this post I’m little more than halfway into this book, which I went into with admittedly low expectations. Maybe because of that, but I’m actually finding it more enjoyable than not. I’m skimming a lot so this definitely won’t be a five stars (I’m leaning towards a 3.5 stars rating for now but we’ll see). This is exactly the type of enjoyable read that I would say is perfect for a casual reader, which I’m not fdshlfhsl. I would have loved for this to be more engaging but it is what it is and I feel like I’m finally getting to the more interesting part so everything is good (unless I hate the second half, which might still happen).

📘 Phoenix Extravagant by Yoon Ha Lee  —  e-ARC // my first YHL book! And it could have gone a lot worse! I still need to write a full review but I gave this 4 stars, which are maybe a 3.5 but who knows really, but I really enjoyed it. Especially (predictably) the mecha dragon. And the hot sword woman…

📘 ShootAround by Suspu  —  webcomic [read here] // this was a reread and the webcomic was just as good as I remembered it. It’s such a diverse cast (Black, Mexican, Asian characters) and there’s so many different types of relationships portrayed (f/f/f polyamory, open relationships, trans characters, a-spec characters, sapphic and mlm characters) and it’s just such a joyful experience. It’s a fun take on the zombie apocalypse but it doesn’t lack heartfelt moments and a lot of depth. If you’re into webcomics I highly recommend it, and if you’re not this would be a very good place to start!

📕 Guardian by priest   —  webnovel // because of my impending reading slump I feel like the best thing I can do is….start a 100+ chapters Chinese webnovel? FDHSLFSDHLHS okay but hear me out, in my experience reading cnovels is a lot easier, like yeah they’re long as fuck but they also flow really well for some reason. Anyway I’m gonna read this with my friend Ash who has already watched the show, but I’m reading it before so I can watch the censored show knowing the full gay that happens in canon. I hope it will be my next obsession, if not I might seriously never read another book again (or until I’m bored with life)

  1. “And it could have gone a lot worse!” = dskjfh but one thing that is also true for Lee’s short stories is that the newer it is the less likely it is to be experimental™ while still staying kind of strange. Anyway, I’m glad you liked it overall!

And I’m curious about The Lights of Prague, I really like that cover but haven’t actually heard anything about the content so far. …By “perfect for a casual reader” do you mean someone who has a functioning, un-picky attention span when it comes to books? If so that’s not me either kjdfh

    1. Skddkdh I meant it in “someone who isn’t at all times stressing about how they’re using their time and if they should be spending it on books they like but aren’t necessarily going to end up on their favorite list” dkdhddk but to be honest I’m almost done and I quite enjoyed it because of its high skimmability — if it had been the type of book where you need to read every detail I would have ended up being too frustrated to continue under my current reading-related stress, it’s quite detailed not in an unpleasant way and I think the writing is nice, but I’m just not in the mood to read All That skhssks (I hope this made sense somehow)

  2. Personally I enjoy the rambly content. Don’t know why though 😅 and I feel like this month is a month for slump (??) because I’m currently in a slump and people I interacted with recently told me they’re also having a slump/meh reading month. And it definitely sucks.

Anyway I’m not reading anything right now hahah 😅 Wishing you all the best with your reading, Silvia!! Also you tackling a 100+ chapters cnovel when the slump is looming is someone I can never relate to for the rest of my life 😂 I mean HOW’D YOU DO THAT??

    1. YES everyone i know is slumping and i don’t know why, is it the pandemic fatigue or what?? fdshklsh

thank you ♥ ahdajdhashdahd i don’t knowww lol on one side it’s intimidating but in a way cnovels lately feel like the only kind of books i read purely for myself, so that makes me want to read them more even if i’m in a slump! if that makes sense!

      1. Maybe yes, maybe something else, or maybe both 😅 anyway the pandemic is still happening so yeah.

It is intimidating especially with the 100+ chapters 😂 ahhh the books you read purely for yourself huh? Now that you mentioned it I think mine would be BL manga since that’s the kind of material I’d always reached for anytime no matter if I have slump or not.
