WWW Wednesday #25

WWW Wednesday is a weekly book meme hosted by Sam @ Taking on a World of Words. The Ws are the following questions:

  • What are you currently reading?
  • What did you recently finish reading?
  • What do you plan on reading next?

Hello! I mentioned last week that I’m going to use this space for weekly updates but to be honest I don’t have anything interesting to say this week. Part of my vacation has ended, I’m still in Italy in my hometown but the next step is approaching and it’s going to be a full return to normal, which means I can already feel the September depression. It’s also been really cold for a few days so that really brought me down.

I respect anyone who loves autumn but it’s the worst season for me, so whenever I see signs that that’s where we’re heading it really affects my mental health. Thankfully it’s still summer despite the occasional cold days so I’m going to try to make the most of it even while I have to really get back into studying and getting ready for the next semester (which will mostly be online again, fortunately).

Yeah, anyway, let’s talk about books? August is over and I completely failed the Failed Readathon Readathon. I haven’t read one single thing I had planned for it, and it just feels like destiny that I can’t succeed at any readathon I join 😦

As you can see I’m not too happy with myself at the moment, but failed readathon and mood aside I’m actually happy with the state of my reading in the past week, so let’s get into it.

current

📖 Guardian by priest   —  webnovel // I mentioned wanting to read this to get out of my slump and it’s kind of working! I’m enjoying it and enjoying buddy reading it with my friend Ash. Is the romantic stuff predictable? Yeah! Whether that’s because this isn’t the first danmei I’ve read or because it really is predictable, it doesn’t mean it’s bad. Tropes exist for a reason! There’s also some nice stuff I haven’t seen before in this genre of novel (talking cat!) so I’m curious to continue.

📖 The Gilda Stories by Jewelle L. Gómez   —  e-copy // this is actually an “ARC” except it’s not an ARC because it already came out years ago and I was approved for a digital copy two days ago (is there a word for that? it’s not an advance reading copy….). Anyway the version I got came out a few years ago as a special anniversary edition but the book came out in 1991 and it’s about a Black girl who’s a runaway slave and becomes a vampire, and it’s basically a lesbian classic I’ve been wanting to read since I first heard about it. It’s divided in big chapters describing different moments in Gilda’s life and I’ve only read the first one so far but, reading difficulty aside, it’s really interesting and as sapphic as it promised to be. I mention reading difficulty because as an ESL reader I find any book written in English more than, idk, twenty years ago slightly more difficult to read than more modern ones. Has English changed so much in so little time?? Anyway, Black lesbian vampires is what I want you to take away from this.

finished

📘 The Lights of Prague by Nicole Jarvis  —  e-ARC // I quite enjoyed this! I would point you all to a review but after reading it I found out it got pushed to next year in May so I think I will wait to post my review on the blog (but you can find it on goodreads)

next

📕 The Sword of Summer by Rick Riordan  —  e-book (reread) // yes!!! finally!!!! I’m going to be buddy-rereading this with my two friends May and Prag and I’m so happy! I’ve postponed this reread (which will be my third time reading this series) for one year but it’s finally time and I can’t wait. This series means so much to me and it’s the first one by RR that I’ve read and there’s not one day when I don’t think about it. I also have a series review I wrote two and a half years ago (please don’t cringe, I was another person entirely and I would word so many things differently). Since I mention this being a buddy read I’m also going to link to my post about which types of books are best to buddy read in case you missed it!

  2. instead of “advance reader copies” (boring, cliché, everyone has them) we have “avanzi reader copies”, in which we get a free book published years ago and still feel guilty for not reading it before an arbitrary netgalley deadline

Let me know how The Gilda Stories ends up being! I’m intrigued by any older queer literature but I also Don’t Trust classics, so…
(also seriously WHY did it have to get cold all of the sudden and rain at random twice a day? It’s annoying and rude and bad for my cacti.)

    1. FDHSJFHSHDSLHS this was inexplicably edelweiss actually (strano)..

i will! it’s definitely a different feeling from more modern books and idk if i trust it or not but it’s written by a Black woman, so i trust that she knows more than i do? fhsdlhs

(i know right, it’s been nice these past two days but i have also had the unpleasant experience of trying to go to the beach, stepping out of the train under un acquazzone da paura che non smetteva più and taking a train back right away,,,, saddest day of my life and worst time ever wasted in a long history of wasting time fhdslh and it didn’t improve my general mood)

      1. …it does make sense that edelweiss would make eARCs available to INTL readers only when the book has literally been out for decades dfjkj

[also got an unintentional shower in one of those few days! even had an umbrella and it was useless. and ouch for the beach]

  3. Yes! What do we call the digital copies we received that have been published already years ago?? I would like to know if there’s a name for them!
