Anti-TBR tag

I saw this tag on my friend May’s post a while ago and I was like, I’m always (not true) talking shit about books and authors (not really) on my twitter but I haven’t really posted a rant or something controversial (?) in a while on my blog so I thought this would be fun.

Absolutely no hate if you love the books/authors I’m mentioning here, and please don’t hate me back. The tag is originally from Nicole & Her Books and here’s her original video. Since I wasn’t tagged myself and I don’t want anyone to feel left out I tag everyone who wants to do this.

1. a popular book everyone loves that you have no interest in reading

The Seven Husbands of Evelyn Hugo by Taylor Jenkins Reid. Nothing against the book or the author but I believe there is such a thing as “too much hype ruins it”, especially when most of the hype seems to be about how painful this book is. I think there’s nothing wrong with queer pain and wanting to write and read about it but I know I would go into this book expecting to not enjoy it, so I took it off my TBR several months ago.

2. a classic book (or author) you don’t have an interest in reading

Anything by D’Annunzio. He’s a classic Italian author but he was pretty much a fascist and most of all fascists adored him, so fuck him.

3. an author whose books you have no interest in reading

I’m going to get in trouble with a lot of my friends for this but…Alice Oseman

3.2 a problematic author whose books you have no interest in reading

Jay Kristoff for the racism, Benj/amin A/lire S/áenz because he attacks bloggers (that’s the reason I censored his name lmao I don’t want to be found by him)

4. an author you have read a couple of books from & have decided their books are not for you

I think I’ll have to say Julian Winters or Cale Dietrich (although I have an ARC of If This Gets Out which is co-authored by him and Sophie Gonzales so I technically will read at least one more thing by him).

5. a genre you have no interest in OR a genre you tried to get into & couldn’t

This is probably THE hardest question because there’s not one broad genre I can name and I have to get into very specific subgenres!! The first that comes to mind is body horror SFF à la The Stars Are Legion (which isn’t to say I’ll never read another similar book, I just won’t gravitate towards it necessarily). The second (although it’s probably more a trope than a genre?) is the subgenre “US author sets a book in Italy” because that never goes well no matter the genre.

6. a book you have bought but will never read (this can be a book you have unhauled/returned to the library unread)

If I Was Your Girl by Meredith Russo. I’m sure there’s a lot more I could name but I’m going to with something I got at the library and returned unread, because I lacked the time, and then later I also found out the author has been accused of sexual assault so I also won’t be supporting her in the future either.

7. a series you have no interest in reading OR a series you started & have dnf’d

There’s probably a lot of series but I don’t actually remember their names without looking them up so I can only think of Twilight which I’ve never read and at this point I feel like it’s a fun fact about me that I’ve never read it or watched the movie either.

8. a new release you have no interest in reading

Any of the newest S/JM books because she’s a z!onist and also reading spoilers about her newest book made me sick to my stomach lmao (but that pales in comparison obviously)

Have you read any of these books or anything by these authors? What’s one author or book you have nothing specific against but you also know you will likely never read?
