down the TBR hole

Down the TBR Hole is a weekly meme hosted by Lia @Lost in a Story. These are the rules:

  • Go to your Goodreads to-read shelf.
  • Order on ascending date added.
  • Take the first 5 (or 10 if you’re feeling adventurous) books
  • Read the synopses of the books
  • Decide: keep it or should it go?

(I’m doing a softcore version of this, and some books will end up on my “maybe” shelf!)

I really don’t know how that happend 😦

Dark Breaks the Dawn by Sara B. Larson: the cover IS SO PRETTY. I added it because it’s a Swan Lake retelling but the reviews are very meh and the book itself sounds very meh just by reading the blurb. ❌

Bright Smoke, Cold Fire by Rosamund Hodge: it has a lot of bad ratings ❌

Life of Pi by Yann Martel: this seems one of those book you have to Get in order to enjoy. I’m generally a person who’s all for this type of book, just not lately and probably not for a while. ❌

Wintersong by S. Jae-Jones: I am SO CONFLICTED. This is a book people apparently either love or hate and there’s no real in between. Some of my friends gave it five stars, others one star. I know I won’t feel like reading it anytime soon though. ❌

Trial by Fire by Josephine Angelini: a lot of people one- or two-starred it and honestly it doesn’t even sound like something I’d enjoy anymore. ❌

The Queen of the Tearling by Erika Johansen: conflicting reviews and a goodreads blurb that would take me 5 minutes to read? No thanks ❌

The Diviners by Libba Bray: okay, here’s the thing. I added this book because everyone keeps recommending the audiobook for it, which is apparently incredible. And folks, I’m all here for a great audiobook, and I’m even sure that if I started it I would love it, but the thing is I don’t care for this book at all, I’M SORRY. I don’t care for the 1920 aesthetics either, since we’re sharing secrets. I’m just not interested and I know even if I remove it from my TBR it’s going to appear on my timeline again, maybe at a point where I’ll feel like adding it back, but for now it’s going ❌

Shadow Study by Maria V. Snyder: you know, I’m really conflicted about this one. I devoured MVS’ books back in…2015? I think 2015. I wasn’t a very critical reader back then so I tended to enjoy a lot of books in a not complicated way, but even then I remember having some issues with these books, especially the trilogy that comes after this sequel series. On the other hand I still enjoyed those books a lot and I’m sure the writer herself improved in the meantime. I don’t know. ❓

27 Days to Midnight by Kristine Kruppa: literally none of my friends have read this or even added it on goodreads?? Maybe 2016!me found the blurb super appealing or something but yeah I don’t even know man. ❌

Beanstalker and Other Hilarious Scarytales by Kiersten White: this sounds really fun and all but I don’t usually pick up middle grade books unless I have an ARC, so this just a matter of not having time for everything. ❌

Okay so I haven’t done this meme since March 10th when life was easy so please give me a break for the fact that between then and now I’ve ended up with 48 books more in my TBR. Also I’ve actually written the core of this post back in March and I’ve had it in my drafts for months and the only thing I’m writing now is this introduction, and reading it is like a letter from naive past me and that’s kinda scary. Anyway enjoy the post and I hope I can get to posting this meme more regularly because my TBR clearly needs it!

Femme by Marshall Thornton – This is supposed to be an m/m romance with a coming out as an adult plot line, if I’m not mistaken, which is something I’d love to see. It’s also under the category “humor” on GR so it sounds like fun. ✅

Thief by Ava March – I’m generally rarely in the mood for historical romance so I guess nope ❌

Binti by Nnedi Okorafor – I’m torn about this. I’ve also just learned that it’s a novella and I generally don’t like fantasy/sci-fi novellas because I feel like there’s not enough time to understand what’s going on. ❌

The Otherlings and other stories by Anne Leinonen – Umm I’m entirely convinced that this was added by mistake because I’m rarely into short stories collections and I’m even more rarely into sci-fi ❌

Magic of Blood and Sea by Cassandra Rose Clarke – Okay I actually have a not very exciting story about this book, but basically I’ve been wanting to buy it since forever, since the book was split in two and it was called The Assassin’s Curse and the cover was so much prettier than this new one (also the books were just ? shorter ? I’d honestly much rather read two 250 pages books than a 500 one oops). It sounded so fun buT!!! I guess they had discontinued producing it before the new edition came out, but anyway I kind of forgot about it while waiting for it to come out again AND NOW I’ve read the blurb again and I can say I still 100% want to read this even though none of my friends have read it but listen, listen……..this is about pirates and assassins okay, I’m weak ✅

Senlin Ascends by Josiah Bancroft – this sounds………….boring I’m sorry ❌

Stormdancer by Jay Kristoff – I love Jay Kristoff but I think I’ve heard that there is some controversy about this book and also I kind of have a hard time reading old releases by authors I love, simply because they’re usually not up to the standards that I’ve become used to. So I think it’s an undecided nope but a nope nevertheless ❌

Written in the Stars by Aisha Saeed – this sounds too sad I can’t ❌

Three Dark Crowns by Kendare Blake – YES! I do wanna read it! The only criticism I’ve heard is that nothing happens for most part of the novel and I find that when other reviewers say that, it means I’m actually going to enjoy the novel lmao. Also everybody screams about the ending so I really wanna try it once I’m more in a fantasy mood. ✅

Sabriel by Garth Nix – I don’t really have any comment, the blurb just sounds too generic ❌

Um I’m pretty sure I deserve a round of applause for not adding anything thanks (the truth is I did add a few books but I also read some from my TBR so they balanced themselves out)

This time I organized the post a bit differently since I found I didn’t actually know what to write about any of these books other than “I’m not interested anymore”.

Ah, the famous Nightrunner series. I wouldn’t be interested in this book if it wasn’t for the 357837.3 people who have personally recommended it to me. It looks a lot like a fantasy book from the Nineties (that’s because it is) and that kind of intimidates me but also I want to trust my friends.

I’m gonna be 100% honest at the time I’m writing this I’ve just drunk half a bottle of mead and I can’t bring myself to even read the synopsis but the cover alone looks way too heterosexual and literally none of my friends have read this

The Kite Runner by Khaled Hosseini 77203

This sounds both really good and like something I wouldn’t get in the right mood for a while. It’s also one of those really famous books which I’m sure I’ll run into again on my goodreads feed or at the bookstore, so I’m not afraid of forgetting about it if I delete it from my TBR.

19486412Big Little Lies by Liane Moriarty

This is a book I bought a while ago and then kind of forgot about, but it stayed in the back of my mind and now I saw a few very positive reviews from my trusted friends and it sparked my interest again. It’s supposed to be a very deep book masked as a chick-lit kinda novel and I am actually curious to read it, possibly soon-ish.

VERDICT: keep

Room by Emma Donoghue7937843

This is something I impulse-bought a while ago and since then I’ve seen the movie based on it and I can’t remember many details but I think I liked it. However, I don’t think I am interested in reading this anymore because of its heavy themes that might trigger me. It’s too bad I bought a digital copy because otherwise I’d try to sell it.

Fun fact, I actually don’t know how to read blurbs and I get bored after half a sentence so I couldn’t even read the blurb for this one, but anyway the first thing I check is always my friends’ reviews and literally nobody has read it, so this one goes.

VERDICT: remove
